Local deals, article on Farm Bill's expiration

Today's One Day Deal at participating Whole Foods is: Bell & Evans air-chilled whole chickens for $1.49/lb (regularly $2.49/lb. These chickens are rated 2 in the animal welfare rating system.

This weekend, all locations of American Plant nursery will have pansies, pumpkins, gourds and other holiday decorations for 25% off. The Bethesda location will open its Haunted Harvest Alien exhibit. Family fun for all (seriously, my kids love this day each year).

Lastly, as you may know, the 2008 Farm Bill expired earlier this week with nothing standing in the wings to take its place. What's the future of American farming? Here's a piece from Civil Eats on just that.

Dinner and debate debrief

I neglected to post a pic of the final product of last night's broccoli rabe dish. I love the color combos, and although the seasonings needed a bigger oomph overall, this was quite satisfying.

Unfortunately, President Obama's performance was not. What a series of unfortunate and disappointing misses. He did nothing to help his cause last night and probably lost the lead he'd amassed. Where's the fire? Where's the pride in all he has done, and the anger over all the Republicans haven't, all they've purposefully and selfishly obstructed?

Dinner good, RSI bad

Ooh, the burnt eggplant and rapini dishes were soooo good. So was the Rioja. And then I found spiced chocolate madeleines in the freezer. Oh, mon dieu. What a treat! And you can be sure that I needed the sustenance they provided as I have been tweeting my face off during this frustrating as get-out debate- right arm RSI? Smug-mug Mittens lied, distorted and condescended at every opportunity. Obama had a few high points but could have taken the gloves off in a much more impressive way. Good god, man, stand proud, stand tall, stand up for us and all you've done. Sigh. At least Percy and I have gotten in a good snuggle. At least the boys are soundly sleeping.
